DTF or screen printing: which is cheaper for your order book?

DTF or screen printing: which is cheaper for your order book?

Is DTF cheaper than screen printing?

DTF is cheaper than screen printing on small, mixed, full-colour orders, and screen printing is cheaper on long runs of a single design with few colours. The reason is setup. Screen printing needs one screen per colour per design, so a 6-colour design carries 6 setups before the first piece is printed, and that cost is spread across the run. DTF has no screen and no plate, so a 1-piece order costs the same to set up as a 500-piece order. As a working rule for an Indian garment unit in 2026: if your average order is under about 200 pieces with more than 3 colours, DTF usually wins. Above roughly 1000 pieces of a 1 or 2 colour design, screen printing usually wins. Many units run both and route the job to whichever fits.

Why does order size decide the answer?

Because the 2 processes put their cost in different places. Screen printing puts cost at the start. DTF spreads cost evenly across every piece.

Where is the break-even for an Indian garment unit?

There is no universal number, because it moves with your colour count, your labour cost and your screen shop's rate. The useful version of the rule is this: DTF wins below roughly 200 pieces per design when the artwork carries more than 3 colours, and screen printing wins above roughly 1000 pieces of a 1 or 2 colour design.

Between those 2 points, the deciding factor is usually not cost per piece at all. It is whether you own the machine. An in-house DTF line lets you accept a reorder at 9pm. An outsourced screen job does not.

What does DTF change about the orders you can accept?

It changes the floor. Personalised gifting and small-batch apparel run on orders of 1 to 50 pieces, and that is exactly the size a screen setup cannot absorb profitably. India's custom t-shirt printing market reached USD 176.6 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 407.9 million by 2034 at a 9.75% CAGR, according to IMARC Group. Most of that growth sits in small, personalised, fast-turnaround work.

Globally the same pattern shows in the equipment market. Grand View Research valued direct to film printing at USD 2.7 billion in 2024, forecast to reach USD 3.9 billion by 2030 at a 6.0% CAGR.

Which one should you buy first?

Buy against the order book you already have, not the one you hope for.

Frequently asked questions

Does DTF work on polyester and nylon?

Yes. DTF transfers apply to cotton, polyester, denim, nylon, leather, canvas and swimwear fabric. That fabric range is the main reason a unit with a mixed catalogue chooses DTF over a fabric-specific process.

Is DTF quality as good as screen printing?

For full colour and photographic artwork, DTF holds detail screen printing cannot reproduce without many screens. For large flat areas of a single spot colour, a well-run screen print still has an edge in opacity and hand feel. Judge on your own artwork, not on a general claim.

Can DTF replace my screen printing setup completely?

Only if your order book is genuinely small and mixed. If you regularly run thousands of pieces of one simple design, keep the screen line and add DTF for the work it cannot take profitably.

What is the minimum order for DTF?

One piece. There is no screen to make and no plate cost, so the setup for a single garment is the same as for a full run. That is the specific economics that make small personalised orders worth accepting.
